Setup New Email Account - Outlook Express

If Outlook Express fails to send or receive using the settings shown below, you may have to download and install an alternative email application or upgrade your operating system. Microsoft no longer supports Outlook Express (or Windows XP, on which it is typically installed).

An alternative is Windows Live Mail. Instructions to download are linked in the document. Another alternative is Thunderbird, which may be downloaded from

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. If this is the first time you have started the program, the mail setup wizard will automatically open. If it does, skip ahead to step 4. If the wizard does not start, click the Tools menu and select Accounts.
  3. Click the Mail tab at the top of the Internet Accounts dialog box. Click the Add button in the upper right corner and select Mail from the menu.
  4. Enter your name in the Display name field (e.g., Jane Doe) and click Next.
  5. Enter your email address in the E-mail address field (e.g., and click Next.
    1. In the Email Server Names dialog box, verify that POP3 is selected from the drop-down menu My incoming mail server is a POP 3 server. Advanced users may use IMAP.
      1. For the Incoming Mail (POP3, IMAP)  Server:

  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter your OlympusNet email address (e.g., or in the Account name field  (the full email address is required) and your password in the Password field. Remember password should be checkmarked. Click Next, and then click Finish.
  8. After clicking Finish, if you do not see the Internet Accounts dialog box, click the Tools menu from the toolbar and select Accounts.
  9. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click on the Mail tab, then select your account to highlight it. Click the Properties button on the right.
  10. Click The Servers tab. The settings should match those in the text for step 5. Be sure My server requires authentication is checked. Click the Settings button to the right.
  11. The check box is checked: Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
    Click OK.
  12. Click OK again to close the Properties dialog box. Click the Close button.
