When you launch Windows 8 for the first time, you will be prompted to create a Windows 8 User account.

There are two types of Windows 8 User accounts to choose from:

  • Microsoft account
When you sign into Windows 8 with a Microsoft account:
  1. You must associate an email address with your Windows 8 User account.
  2. Microsoft apps automatically update online content.
  3. Your settings will be synced across other Windows 8 PCs you use.
  • Local account
When you sign into Windows 8 with a Local account:
    1. You are not required to associate an email address with your Windows 8 User account.
    2. You will have to create a new user account for each Windows 8 PC you use.
    3. Your settings won't be synced across the Windows 8 PCs you use.

We recommend using your OlympusNet email address when creating a Microsoft account.

  • To create a Microsoft account, follow these steps:
    1. Enter your OlympusNet email address in the box titled Use your favorite email address as a Microsoft account to sign in to Windows and click the Next button.
    2. If the email address is not already a registered Microsoft account you will be prompted for your personal information.
    3. Do not use your OlympusNet email password as your Microsoft account password. We recommend you create a new password for your Microsoft account and document it for safekeeping. Should you misplace or forget your Microsoft account password, we will not be able to give it to you. OlympusNet does not have access or control over your Microsoft account. Questions, changes, or issues related to your Microsoft account should be directed to Microsoft at http://login.live.com
    4. Do not check the box titled Is this a child's account? unless the Windows 8 User account is for a minor and you want to restrict and log their activity.
    5. Once the sign up process is complete, you will be prompted to sign in to your Microsoft account. Your Windows 8 user sign in will now use your Microsoft account credentials.
    6. You will receive an email from Microsoft account team at the address you specified. It requires you to verify the email address that was used with your New Microsoft account. You must click the link in that email and sign in to complete the sign up process. Failure to verify the email address may result in an account lockout that will prevent you from accessing the Windows Account. It may also prevent you from using the same email address when attempting to create a new Microsoft account.

If you do not want to associate an email address with your Windows 8 User account create a Local account.

  • To create a Local account, follow these steps:
    1. Choose Sign in without a Microsoft account and then select the Next button.
    2. Click the Local account button.
    3. Enter a User name, Password, and Password hint. Then click the Next button.
    4. To complete the Local account creation, click Finish.
    5. You can then sign in using the Local account.
