1996/97 - Port Townsend, Washington
- General Music
I utilized standard curriculum guidelines for Washington State to create a general music program which had not existed at the school prior to my tenure there. Swan School tends to promote the fine arts so I emphasized singing skills and created a recorder performance group as well as a handbell choir using the very fine three-octave handbell set I had access to as the Choir Director for the Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Townsend. This was a favorite activity for the students. I also invited outside performance groups such as the Wild Rose Chorale to come and perform for the students once a month to further enrich the program.
- Computer Science
Swan School had three antiquated Amiga computers which did not have the ability to run any current educational software. I used these to teach keyboarding skills to the students. In order to enrich the students' computer experiences, I took a small group to the public library once a week to introduce them to the Internet. I also introduced them to Internet authoring and hypertext concepts.
