Performance Group Index

I have performed in many venues and enjoy playing and singing lots of different styles. Check below to see some of the groups I have been in and what they are about. I used to host the monthly jazz jam at the Public House Restaurant and various benefit concerts I promoted from time to time (usually at the Palindrome) for such worthy causes as Bergita House (a safehouse for disturbed children), the Boiler Room (a community sponsored youth coffee shop) and the Tri-Area Teen Center in Port Hadlock. I also have pages showing my performance history as well as a list of local entertainment venues in and around Port Townsend, Washington.

PERFORMANCE GROUPS

My Single Act

I sing and accompany myself on string bass and guitar in and around the Port Townsend, Washington area, sometimes with my son, Sean (born 1987) on congas. I play most all styles and try to please my audience. I lean toward jazz and blues... Some of the places I have played (by myself) include: Lanza's Italian Ristorante, the Otter Crossing Cafe, the Saturday Farmer's Market, Sirens, the Boiler Room, the Public House, the Silverwater Cafe, the Uptown Pub, the Back Alley Tavern, and the Surf Restaurant (hope I haven't forgotten anybody).

The Wild Rose Chorale

Swinging vocal jazz. With 12 members (6 male and 6 female), we are able to perform pieces written for many different voice groupings. The group was strictly a cappella until I joined. Now, they let me play my string bass on a few numbers. (Think Manhattan Transfer, King Singers...). Group photo (17K - Use the 'Back' button to return here).

The Greg Vinson Dance Band

This band is a favorite for crowds that like to dance. Featuring R & B, blues, jazz, rock and roll, plus a smattering of all other styles, we tune our personnel and set-lists based on the audience we are playing for. The group has been around for a few years under various names such as Triad and The Intergalactic Blues Band. Several of the local clubowners urged me to use my own name in the band's name since I am becoming pretty well-known in the area.

The Jazz Avenue Duo/Trio

This is a brand new jazz duo/trio with personnel drawn from the Jazz Crossing Jam Sessions. Middle School students Marlon Schmidt (age 12 - piano) and Willy Ingersoll (age 12 - alto sax and harmonica) have been really tearing it up at the sessions and have adult-sized appetites (and playing chops) for jazz. They are kindly allowing me (a real old guy) to play string bass with them as long as I promise to bring plenty of Geritol. Don't miss them in action if you get the chance to attend one of their gigs! (The JA Duo is just Marlon and myself.)

Sound Jazz

Justen Fauth is a fine young local tenor sax player who does solo gigs and goes by the name "Sound Jazz". He favors a progressive avant garde style and also does well with the jazz standards. He is a regular attendee of the Jazz Crossing Jam Sessions. I sometimes accompany him on string bass for some of his longer engagements. Marlon Schmidt (piano - Jazz Avenue Trio) also plays with Sound Jazz sometimes.

The Norma Fried Jazz Trio

This fine local group performs mellow jazz standards with vocalist Norma Fried and Doren Campbell on piano. I play string bass with them.

The Dukes of Dabob

Swinging dixie, traditional jazz and blues. I am the baby in this band (I play 2nd string tuba and string bass when the regular tuba player can't make it) and I'm 44! Half the members of this 8-piece group are (retired) music teachers. We tried to add up the years of music experience in the band but came up with an irrational number. This band will make your foot tap.

Port Townsend Gospel Choir

OK, I made it up. But seriously folks, the first one took place in 1998 on Martin Luther King Day at the Rose Theater. It was all high school girls with me on congas. Wow. Imagine the slide show on the Rose theater's screen when you watch it. It was great. His famous speech is the sound track. It's a moving event. Group Index, Past Performances, Main Music Page

Trinity United Methodist Church Choir

We are currently in our summer recess but are still in need of special music every Sunday. A love of singing is our only requirement. Tolerance is our main rule. Contact me if you are interested in performing for our congregation this summer

The Uptown Girls

This female singing group is bright and cheery. Marj, Sally, Leslie and Lynn blend their voices to croon tunes ranging in style from traditional 40's swing to modern tongue-in-cheek. They allow me to back them up on string bass sometimes. It is always a treat for me to perform with this fine group. In this photo of the Wild Rose Chorale, Marj is in the front row at the left, Leslie is in the front row next after Marj, Lynn is in the front row next after Leslie, and Sally is in the back row, on the right (next to me).

Weekends -- Nice days -- (whenever)

The Cartoon Planet Band

On nice summer days I often set up next to Elevated Ice Cream on Water Street in Port Townsend, Washington with my string bass, guitar, trombone, and my son, Sean (born 1987), on congas. Watch for us at the Saturday Farmers Market too. Other venues which have featured this duo include: Grant Street School, Lanza's Italian Ristorante, The Public House, and the Otter Crossing Cafe back when it was called Hudson's Cup.
