Well,
the day finally arrived and we left Hollywood Beach at 5:45am... totally
dark, but to make the best use of the tide, this was the time we needed to
hit the water. We had small, but very bright, lights on our PFD's.
Not
much traffic this day, we only had to wait for 2 other boats to clear our
path. |

Two miles out we made contact with our support boat,
Second Wind. On board, with Captain Eugene Fromm, were Paul Mooney (Laura's
guy) and Sheryl (Steve's wife and photographer for the day).
Paddling in the dark without a firm horizon is a bit confusing, you really
get to experience your balance. But conditions improved quickly. |

As the sun began to materialize, the
surface of the water became exceptionally quiet, and we found ourselves in
the midst of a color scheme ranging from steel blue to coral. The
last time I admired a sunrise this nice during an athletic challenge, I
ended up in the middle of a nice bicycle crash... this one turned out much
better. |
