Laura a friend I built a kayak for that summer, suggested that
we put in some quality time on the water and paddle from Port Angeles
WA. to Victoria B.C. the following year. So we picked the first weekend
of October 2000 as our primary target date. |

I've never been
one to back out of an adventure, but as the date started to creep up, I
started to wonder if I was up to a 21 mile open water crossing when 99%
of my kayaking experience has been on lakes and protected waters. But
when it's a girl that has challenged you, it makes it a bit difficult to say
no, and still walk upright.
So, with a healthy dose of pride, and the natural rush of anticipation,
we prepped our boats and grabbed a few hours of sleep before our date on
the beach at 5:30am.
