Summer 1998
This summer my family and I traveled to Russia and the Republic of
Georgia. We flew 10 1/2 hours on Aeroflot nonstop to Moscow from
Seattle. In Moscow we visited the Kremlin, Lenin's Tomb, Red Square,
the underground subways, and museums. Lenin's body is frozen so everybody
can remember & see him. There were some things the same as the U.S.,
like MacDonalds, Baskin Robbins, and a mall. One particular fashion
thing we noticed, was that the women wore very high heels and platform
shoes. Nike is also really popular in Russia and The Republic of
Georgia. After a few days in Moscow, we flew to Tbilisi, Georgia
and met up with the family we were staying with, Nana, Ketevan, Alek, and
Ellen. We toured around the whole city and saw the Ethnographic Museum.
My dad first met Nana here in 1990 when they were both working on the film
"The Falcon" during the Goodwill Games. Then we visited the region
of Swaneti in the Caucausus Mountains and stayed in some of the villages.
In one village we went through we were the first Americans to visit.
We stayed with a family in Ushguli, the highest village in Europe, and
they killed a calf for our dinner. They had a big party with singing,
dancing, and lots of toasting.
