Hostelling International Port Townsend Olympic

Land Stewardship

The HI-Olympic Hostel, as a component of its environmental program, has taken up stewardship of several areas at Fort Worden State Park. Our volunteer crews work one Saturday morning each month uprooting invasive weeds and clearing dead brush, then gather for lunch provided by the hostel.

One project has opened up a large meadow area, where the Third Aerial batteries once were located, with a view toward the south across Fort Worden. It has involved hostel guests from around the world, the Friends group of the hostel (HI-FI), the Jefferson Trails Coalition, several Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, and the work crew from the Jefferson County Juvenile Services Dept.

Groups and troops are invited to participate in this community service project in exchange for reduced overnight rates at the hostel. A minimum number of five participants is required. The hostel will provide all necessary tools and gloves. Appropriate work clothes and shoes should be worn.

Interested groups can contact the hostel's group coordinator, Christopher Overman, at (360) 385-0655 for more information.
