received by the residents of Island County. Earnings were 61.5% of TPI in
1989. By 1999, earnings were 62.6% of TPI. Dividends, interest, and rent were
27% (compared with 25.5% in 1989); and transfer payments were 10.4% (compared
with 9.4% in 1989). From 1989 to 1999, earnings increased on average 6.3%
each year; dividends, interest, and rent increased on average 7.4%; and
transfer payments increased on average 7.8%.

Earnings of
persons employed in Island County increased from $565,648* in 1989 to $913928*
in 1999, an average annual growth rate of 4.9%. The largest industries in
1999 were military, 43.0% of earnings; services, 12.4%; state and local
government, 11.1%. In 1989, the largest industries were military, 51.7% of
earnings; services, 10.7%; state and local government, 11.1%; and retail trade,
13.8%. Of the industries that accounted for at least 5% of earnings in 1999,
the slowest growing from 1989 to 1999 was militiary; the fastest was state and
local government which increased at an average annual rate of 7.2%.
