CHECKING YOUR Web PAGE

It is important that your page appears as you intended it to, on as many Web browsers as possible.

Checking Your Page With Only Your Favorite Browser Is Not Enough

You have created your page. It is perfect. You know that, because it looks just as you intended it to look, when you use your favorite Web browser. But wait...what about those other people, who are foolish enough to use some other browser? How do they see your perfect page? In extreme cases, they may miss a large portion of your page. Have you supplied reasonable alternatives to that Java or ActiveX goodie on your page? Or the images? Some people, even with the same browser you have, may prefer to turn such features off. Some people prefer to view pages with images turned off.

What can I do about this?

First, try out your page in as many browsers as you can. Ask a friend with a different computer (Mac or Windows, whichever you do not have) to help.

Second, verify that the HTML used on your page is correct. Although the meaning of "correct" varies between browsers, you can at least check your page against the HTML standards.

The HTML standards organization is the World Wide Web Consortium. The Consortium maintains a Web page which you can use to validate your HTML. When you do so, you get a report of HTML problems which WebLint has spotted. Other good validators include iCab (for Mac), BBEdit (current paid for version for Mac), and CSS validation.
