This document describes domain names: what they are,
what domain name services are available on OlympusNet, how much they cost, and
how they are managed.
Domain NamesA domain name is a name used to identify your presence on the Internet. It may include your Web site (www.yourcompanyname.com), your email (e.g., sales@yourcompanyname.com), or both. The domain name is just "yourcompanyname.com". All domain names must be hosted somewhere. Having a domain name is not the same thing as having a Web site. For more information about domain names and policies, see the The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) FAQs.Purpose of a Domain NameThe domain name is used to attach a name to a person or company's email or Web site addresses so that the person or company can readily be found. The domain name allows the moving of email or the Web site to a different provider without affecting the person or company's customers.Choosing a Domain NameYou choose your own domain name; however there are some naming rules, and you may only use a name that has not already been taken. Domain names consist of two parts separated by a period: 1) your chosen domain name ("yourcompanyname") and 2) the extension (".com"). You may use any letters and numbers for your chosen name, but no punctuation marks other than a '-' are allowed. The name may be no more than 63 characters long. Here are some examples of domain names and extensions.Domain Name AvailabilityYou can determine whether a domain name is available by typing it in here and clicking "Check WHOIS". You must include the extension! For example, enter: yourcompanyname.com Do NOT enter: www.yourcompanyname.com! Domain Names on OlympusNetNew hosting options are available.
