Return to the Pictorial FAQs

Installing the Dialup connection

1.  Double click on My Computer.

2.  Double click on Dial-Up Networking.

3.  Double click on Make New Connection.

4.  Under "Type a name for the computer you are dialing:"  it says "My Connection". Change it to read: "OlympusNet"(without the quote marks). This is the name that will be put on the icon you will click to log on to OlympusNet.

Your modem name should be listed in the Select a device: box.   After typing in OlympusNet, click Next

5.  Based on your location and modem speed, type in the appropriate telephone number from the Modem Telephone Number list and then  click Next

6.  Your connection is now complete.  Click Finish.

7.  The Dial-Up Networking window should already appear on your screen.  If this is not the case, double click on My Computer, then double click on Dial-Up Networking.  You will see two items appear; one is OlympusNet (the connection we just made) and the other is Make New Connection.   Single click on OlympusNet to highlight it.

8.  Next, right click on OlympusNet and left click on Properties

9.  The dialog box to the left will appear.  Click on the Server Types tab.

10.  Make sure that the only items with a check mark next to them are Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP.  If anything else is checked, uncheck it by clicking on its box.  Then, Click OK

11.  Now it is time to create a shortcut to OlympusNet on your desktop.  To do this, first single click on OlympusNet.

12.  Right click on OlympusNet and left click on Create Shortcut.

13.  When the dialog box to the left appears, click Yes.  An OlympusNet shortcut will appear on your desktop.

14.  Close your Dial-Up networking and My Computer windows by clicking on the X in the top right hand  corners.  You will now see a Shortcut to OlympusNet icon on your desktop.

To rename this shortcut to just OlympusNet, single click on the shortcut icon.

15.  Next, put your mouse in the highlighted area and single click again.  This will cause  a small box to appear around the highlighted area.  Drag your cursor over the part that says "Shortcut To".

16.  Press the Backspace key on your keyboard to remove the text.  Then press Enter.  You will now see an icon on your desktop called simply OlympusNet.

17.  Double-click on your new OlympusNet shortcut. Here's where you enter your email address in the user name box and the password in the password box. Remember to enter these EXACTLY as they were given to you - your email address is all in lower case with no spaces, and the password is in upper or lower case as it was given to you, including all punctuation characters. As you type in the password, note that you do not see it on the screen; you see only a string of asterisks to shield the password from anyone who may be looking over your shoulder. If you don't want to type in the password every time you connect, check Save Password.

18.  Now you must enter some local information for the modem.  Click on the Dialing Properties button at the bottom. In the new screen, enter your area code (360), disable call waiting if you have it by clicking in the box to enter a check mark which will automatically give you the option of entering the appropriate code (*70,). It is disabled in this picture, but DO NOT disable call waiting unless you have call waiting on the computer phone line. (Disabled call waiting will only be in effect while your modem is in use; it will be re-enabled once you disconnect).

Make sure Tone Dialing is selected near the bottom of the window.

19.   Click OK to close the Dialing Properties box.

20.   This is the moment of truth - the BIG TEST! Make sure you have connected the phone line to the modem and Click Connect. Your computer will make dialing noises, a couple of progress messages will appear, and then if all is well, the dialog box to the left will appear.  If you do not wish to see this dialog box every time you connect, go ahead and check Do now show this dialog box in the future.  Then click Close.

21.  You will see an illustration of two green computers in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.  This proves that you are connected to OlympusNet

22.  To disconnect from OlympusNet, double click on the two green computers; the dialog box at left will appear (note that the "connected at field" will be different on your system depending upon your physical location and type of modem).

23.  Click on Disconnect to terminate your connection with OlympusNet.
