Setting up the Dial-Up Adapter, Client for Microsoft Networks, and TCP/IPIf your computer has been connected to the Internet before, you may already have some of the necessary Network components installed for connecting to OlympusNet. If you have used a national provider (such as AOL) in the past, you may find these components here as well. In addition, your computer manufacturer may have installed Network software that is not needed for your computer. If you are unsure about removing one of these "extra" components, leave it alone as it probably won't get in the way of your OlympusNet connection. |
1. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel. 2. In Control Panel, double click on the Network Control Panel. You now see a window labeled "The following network components are installed". This may or may not be totally blank. If this is a computer at your place of work and you are connected to a network via a network card, the network card is listed in this window. Do not remove it without consulting with the system administrator. |
3.
Your Network icon box should look as shown to the left.
Check to see whether you have the following three items listed: Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP. If you have other items listed, such as Client for NetWare Networks, NetBEUI , IPX/SPX, Microsoft Family Logon, single click on each of these items one by one; then click the Remove button. Continue to click the Remove button until all of the excess items are removed from the list and you have only the three items listed. NOTE: If you are connected to a Local Area Network (LAN) you may leave these extra items in place. If you are unsure about removing any one of these components, you may leave it in place as it most likely will not interfere with your OlympusNet connection. If these three items are in place, your configuration is complete and you may proceed to Installing the Dialup connection. If these three items are not listed, you will need to add any that are missing by following the steps outlined below.

Networks in the Network Clients column on the right. Then click
OK.
6. You will now be back at the Network component page. Client for Microsoft Networks has been added to your list. If Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP are already on your list, you may proceed to Installing the Dial-Up connection. If not, please continue to add the remaining two items.

8. Select Microsoft in the Manufacturers column and Dial-Up Adapter in
the Network Adapters column. Then click OK.
9. You are once again back at the Network component page. Dial-Up Adapter has now been added to your list along with Client for Microsoft Networks. Now it is time to install the final component, called TCP/IP.

11. Select Microsoft in the Manufacturers column and select TCP/IP
at the very bottom of the Network Protocols column. Then click OK.
12. Once you have all three items listed: Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP, your Network Control Panel configuration is complete. Click OK and you will see Windows build a drivers database. It may ask you to insert your Microsoft Windows CD-ROM or automatically start copying the necessary files from a file on your hard drive. Once the transfer is complete, it will say "You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?" Click YES. Windows will go through a complete startup sequence. |
