Accessing Newsgroups With Netscape Communicator or Outlook Express

This document describes how to configure Netscape Communicator or Outlook Express to access newsgroups available on OlympusNet. Instructions for both the Windows and Mac versions of this software are given.

Configuring Netscape Communicator (Mac and Windows)

  1. Open Communicator, click the Edit menu then click Preferences.
  2. In the "Category" column on the left of the Preferences window, click on the "+" sign to the left of "Mail and Newsgroups" (Mac users should click on the small disclosure triangle instead of a plus sign.) This will display a series of sub-options including "Identity," "Mail Servers," and "Newsgroup Servers."  Click on Newsgroup Servers.
  3. In the upper right corner of the window, click the Add button which will open a small Properties window.
  4. Type newsgroups.olympus.net in the server line and check the box labeled "Always use name and password." Click OK then click OK again on the next window to return to Communicator. 
The first time you subscribe to newsgroups, you will be asked to enter a username.  When this happens, enter your OlympusNet email address (e.g. janedoe@olympus.net) then click OK.  Next, you will be asked for a password.  Enter your OlympusNet password then click OK.

Configuring Outlook Express for Windows

  1. Open Outlook Express, click the Tools menu and then click Accounts.
  2. Click the News tab at the top of the Internet Accounts window. Click the Add button in the upper-right corner and select "News" from the fly-out menu.
  3. Enter your name in the "Display Name" line. Click Next.
  4. Enter your email address then click Next.
  5. In the News NNTP Server line, type newsgroups.olympus.net then check the box labeled "My news server requires me to log on." Click Next.
  6. In the Account Name line, type your email address (e.g.. janedoe@olympus.net) then enter your OlympusNet password in the password line.  Make sure the save password box is checked, but do NOT check the box labeled "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."
  7. Click Finish to return to the Internet Accounts window. Click Close in the bottom-right corner of the window to return to the main Outlook Express window.
Configuring Outlook Express 5 for Mac
  1. Open Outlook Express, click the Tools menu and then click Accounts.
  2. Click the News tab at the top of the  Accounts window then click the "New" button in the upper-left corner of the window. This will start the Account Setup Assistant.
  3. Your email address should appear near the top.  If you use multiple email addresses with Outlook Express, you can choose the email address you wish to have listed on your newsgroup postings. Leave the Organization line blank and click the continuation triangle in the bottom-right corner of the window.
  4. In the News NNTP Server line, type newsgroups.olympus.net  and check the box labeled "My server requires me to log on." Continue to the next screen.
  5. In the Account ID line, enter your email address (e.g. janedoe@olympus.net). Next, check the box "Save Password" then enter your OlympusNet password in the space provided. Continue to the next screen.

  6. In the Account Name line  type newsgroups.olympus.net again then click Finish.
