This guide shows you how to install Linux's* Internet connection capabilities
under X-Windows, for use with programs such as a Web browser or Email package.
Installation Steps
-
Login to your Linux system as root, and launch Xwindows.
-
Click anywhere on the desktop to open the Start menu
-
From the Administration menu, choose Network Configuration.
-
In the Network Configurator window, click on the Names tab, and enter the
following information:
-
Hostname: your OlympusNet username
-
Domain: olympus.net
-
Nameservers:
198.133.237.1
198.133.237.19
-
When finished entering the information, click the Save button.
-
Click on the Interfaces tab, then click the Add button.
-
When asked to choose an interface type, select PPP, then click Ok.
-
In the Create PPP Interface window, enter the following information:
-
Phone Number: select the appropriate number from our list
of modem telephone numbers
-
PPP login name: your OlympusNet email address
-
PPP password: your OlympusNet password
When finished entering the information, click the Customize button.
In the Hardware tab of the resulting window, choose the speed and port
for your modem. If you want to allow users other than root to use the connection,
you should also check Allow any user to (de)activate interface. Modem ports
compare to DOS communication ports as follows:
ttyS0 = com1 under DOS
ttyS1 = com2 under DOS
ttyS2 = com3 under DOS
ttyS3 = com4 under DOS
If your modem requires an initialization string other than the default
(ATZ), click on the Communication tab and enter it in the box provided.
Click the Done button, and when asked if you want to save the configuration,
click Save.
Click the Save button in the Network Configurator window.
Congratulations, you've finished setting up your dialup connection. From
now on, when you want to connect the Internet, just open the Network Configurator
and activate the PPP connection, or use the UserNet utility provided
in the Networking section of the Start menu.
*Note: These instructions are based on RedHat 5.2, and depending on the
configuration tools available, may not apply to other Linux distributions.
If your X-Windows installation does not include the Network Configurator
utility, try using the non-X-Windows
instructions, which apply to a broader range of Linux versions.
