Installing an OlympusNet Dialup Connection in Windows XP Using the Internet Connection Wizard

This document explains how to set up a Dialup connection in Windows XP to access OlympusNet.  To set up a  Dialup connection you will need three pieces of information: your Dialup Username, the Dialup Password, and the Dialup Local Number.

Dialup Username

The Dialup username is your primary email address.  For example, if your primary email address is janedoe@olympus.net, then your Dialup username will be: janedoe@olympus.net

Dialup Password

Your Dialup password will be the same password as for your OlympusNet primary email address. In the example above, the Dialup password would be the same as the one for the email address, janedoe@olympus.net.

Dialup Local Numbers

Please consult our Modem Telephone Numbers page for a few common local area dialup numbers, and links to local dialup numbers for nationwide locations.

Connecting the Modem

Most new computers come with an internal modem featuring a pair of phone jacks. One of these jacks should be labeled "To Line" and the other "To Phone". Quite often these labels are difficult to read, so you may wish to consult your system documentation to determine which is which. You will need to have a phone line connecting your wall phone jack with the "To Line" jack of your modem. If you wish, you can connect an ordinary phone into the "To Phone" jack. This phone may be used in the normal way when you are not connected to the Internet.

The New Connection Wizard

Windows' Connection Wizard now handles much more than Internet Connections so experienced users will notice a few more steps at the beginning of the process. NOTE: The Connection Wizard will not delete any old ISP settings, but will add new dialers that will become the new "default" settings.

Starting the Internet Connection Wizard

  1. To start the Connection Wizard, click on your Start menu, then click All Programs | Accessories | Communications | New Connection Wizard. The first screen of the wizard is informational.  Click Next.
  2. Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
  3. Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
  4. Select Connect using a dialup modem and click Next.
  5. Enter Olympusnet  in the ISP Name box and click Next.
  6. Based on your location, enter the appropriate telephone number.   Please consult the Modem Telephone Numbers list.  You should not need 1 or an area code. Click Next.
  7. Enter your primary email address in the User name box, and enter your password in the password box.  (Note that as you type in the password, you will not see it on the screen; only a string of asterisks to shield the password from anyone who may be looking over your shoulder.) Type your password again in the Confirm Password box.
  8. Leave the Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer box checked, unless you do not want others who may log on to your computer to use your dialup connection. Check the Make this the default Internet connection box.  Check the Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection if it is present.   Click Next.
  9. Check the  Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop box if you wish to have a shortcut to the connection on your desktop.  Click Finish.
  10. To check your dialup connection, select Internet Explorer from the Start menu.  You will get a Dialup Connection screen. Click the Connect button.
