The World Wide Web is the most common way to access
information available on the Internet. The World Wide Web is a
system for browsing Internet sites. It is called the Web because many
sites are linked together. Websites are accessed using a web
browser. A list of the most commonly used web
browsers follows.
Firefox (recommended)Firefox is a free Web browser for Windows and Mac OS X. Firefox is a safe browser that offers popup blocking, tabbed browsing, JavaScript support, and privacy and security measures. Firefox is available at the following link: www.mozilla.com/firefox Microsoft Internet ExplorerMicrosoft Internet Explorer (IE) comes with the Windows 98, Me, and XP operating systems. Windows versions of IE 6 have improved safety features. Although older versions of IE were available for Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X, as of January 31st, 2006 Internet Explorer for the Mac is no longer available for download from Microsoft. It is recommended that Macintosh OS X users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Safari, Firefox or Netscape. There are no updated browsers for OS 9. NetscapeNetscape is a free Web browser for Windows and Mac OS X. Netscape 8.x (not yet available for Mac OS X) is a browser that based on Firefox technology and offers popup blocking, tabbed browsing, JavaScript support, and privacy and security measures. Please note that Netscape 8.x does not come with an email program as did previous versions. Netscape 8.1 for Windows is available at the following link: browser.netscape.com/ns8/ SafariSafari is the web browser developed by Apple, Inc., for Mac OS X. Beginning October 24, 2003 with the release of OS X 10.3 (Panther), Safari became the default web browser for OS X. Its features include popup blocking, tabbed browsing, JavaScript support, and privacy and security measures. |
