AN ON-LINE OLYMPUSNET NEWSLETTER

September, 1997

Welcome to our OlympusNet September 1997 NewsFlash
A copy may be found at http://www.olympus.net/olympusnet/olympusfeatures/newsletterSep97.html.
Topics included this issue are:

OlympusWWW
Very early Saturday 9/6 we brought on-line our new OlympusWWW server - still called www.olympus.net. This is our new Pentium 200 with 500Mb RAM, 12Gb internal disks and 16Gb of RAID disk storage.

This server will run our new "form" software that we mentioned in our last newsletter http://www.olympus.net/olympusnet/olympusfeatures/newsletterJul97.html Next week we'll begin tying the forms into a database. We will be teaching classes on how to use the forms in the fall. Our forms are some of the most effective on the Internet.

All OlympusWWW site owners should now ftp their files to OlympusWWW at www.olympus.net, NOT olympus.net. You'll find your files at /biz, or /personal or /community etc instead of at /archive/www/peninsula/biz etc.

Please note that ftp.olympus.net is the same server as olympus.net. Details about how to upload your files may be found at http://www.olympus.net/olympusnet/olympusonly/ftp

OlympusMail
We've installed a new mail program that makes it possible for us to filter spam mail. Hopefully you've noticed that your spam mail is less than it was at the start of the week. Our first targets are the high volume spammers. Later we'll filter the smaller spammers. Some spam will always get through, but you should notice a decrease over the next few weeks.

One of the features of the new software is that mail has an identifiable return address. Mail that does not have a valid return address is rejected. Thus you can always return the spam to "abuse@someDomainName.com". A side effect is that if you're sending mail to someone on OlympusNet, it must have the complete domain name ie. xxxx@olympus.net, not just xxxx.

56KFlex Modems

Last week we installed our Sequim 56k modems. Many of you have already used these digital modems with your analog modems when you connected up at peak hours. We'll be running speed tests for 56k on the modems next week. Look for information on the 56k modems at http://www.olympus.net/olympusnet/olympusonly/phonemodem The 56KFlex modems in Port Townsend were due in Friday September 5th, but regretfully US West ran into a snag and they're not turned up.
