September 13, 2008   12:30 p.m.- Meeting Minutes
Valley Tavern, Port Hadlock (after Fort Flagler walk)

Present:  Kathy Freeny, Susan Leggett, Jim Bendell, Billie Grauberger, Lora Szymanski, Linda Frazer, Tren Williamson, Kathy and Jack Fletcher, Kay Peters, Mary Allen and Jack Clark, Pierre and Heidi Cappuccino, Victor McAllister, Robert Williams, Richard Hansen, Robert and Frances Johnson, Ingrid and Bob Forcier, Sheila Everett

OPE President Mary Allen Clark chaired the meeting and called it to order.  Approval of the previous meeting's minutes (June 28, 2008) was deferred, as they were not available.

Treasurer's report:  Balance of $3,306.63, considered a comfortable reserve.
AVA Awards - none presented at this meeting

Old Business:
1)  Mary Allen said the Canadian visit is still scheduled for next summer, July 26, 2009.  This will coincide with the Port Angeles Arts in Action Festival, and will be coordinated by Sue Pechina.  The actual walk is yet to be determined.
2) Sequim Walk Box:  This will remain at Swain's through the end of 2008 (Dec. 31) and then  will be moved to the Sequim QFC store approx. Jan. 1, 2009.

New Business:
1) Kitsap Club Walk Sept. 27 - Rob Williams said this will be at Evergreen Park in CityplaceBremerton.  It includes two bridges, and is 11 K. Start times are 8am - 1pm.
2) October 11th Troll Stroll:  Kathy Freeny volunteered to be the walk leader.
3) 2009 Club Calendar:  Mary Allen distributed copies of a draft 2009 Walk Schedule, and asked for input.  There was discussion about doing a greater variety of walks, with some in a reverse direction, or with changes in the route, to make things more interesting for people who end up doing the same walks from year to year.  Changes in the Sul Duc and Hurricane Hill walks were mentioned. Also, the schedule was designed with alternating locations, so that everyone is not traveling so far to the walks each time. One idea is to do a walk event in Port Townsend during the Kinetic Sculpture competition weekend Oct. 3, 2009.  A motion was made and seconded to do this event; the motion passed.
4) Kitsap Club Calendar:  Rob Williams discussed a possible half / full marathon / 10K walk to be held by the Kitsap Club sometime in 2009, hopefully a combination event with OPE.  Also, on Dec. 20th the Canadians in placeStateVictoria are planning a walk / potluck BBQ / evening Butchart garden event.
5) New walkers:  Mary Allen asked for suggestions on how to get new walkers signed up more easily (info packets, booklets, new club memberships, etc).  It's too frenzied to do this at the start of a walk when everyone is signing in, getting into carpools, etc. It helps if packets are available at the start of every walk, and a club member follows up with new walkers.  Also, personally inviting new walkers to the subsequent walks might help the club retain new walkers as members.  Mary Allen does email followups.
6) Closed walks:   A reminder that the Colfax, CityplacePullman, and Pomeroy walks are closed.

Reports:    Mary Allen reported on the AVA meeting, and July 11 celebration of its 25th anniversary.

Trails Committee:  Jack Clark discussed the trail section in Robin Hill Farm that OPE maintains.
Publicity:  Richard Hansen reminded members to check the website for changes to the walk calendar.  He will telephone those who do not use computers for this.

The meeting adjourned at 1:10pm.   (Sheila Everett, OPE secretary)
