    Our Roots

The Jefferson County Green Party's founders united for many reasons. They were indignant that American values, rights and civil liberties were neither represented nor respected by the corporate funded political parties. But they were also optimistic that Americans finally had an alternative to the Democrats and Republicans. They supported the Green Party's 2000 Presidential candidate Ralph Nader. After lots of campaigning, Nader received nearly 8% of Jefferson County ballots or over 1,200 votes.

In July 2001, the Jefferson County Green Party affiliated with the Green Party of Washington State. Our local chapter is now united to a profound grassroots movement located in over 75 countries on 5 continents.

    Our Ideology

Greens are pragmatic visionaries. Some of the issues we care about are:
    • Affordable housing & livable wages
    • Safe & sustainable energy alternatives
    • Truly affordable & equitable healthcare
    • Campaign finance & electoral reform
    • Independent, locally owned businesses
    • Preservation of our food & genetic heritage
    • Ending the "Drug War" & death penalty
    • Protecting our natural environment
We are especially concerned with the profiteering that keeps people impoverished and their energies misdirected, the crisis we face because of global environmental destruction, the deep-seated racism and prejudice that undermines and divides communities, and the erosion of our spiritual vision of ourselves as a free people. We believe we can make a difference through personal education, community organizing, direct action, & electoral politics.
