    DEMOCRACY IN ACTION WEEK II

    January 20-26, 2002 is Jefferson County's second annual "Democracy in Action" week of events. This is a unique and special occasion for our community. It is an opportunity for us to reaffirm our commitment to peace, justice and democracy. It is a time to stand up for the rights and freedom of all individuals with our feet and voices, hearts and minds. Why don't you please join us in this time of action, celebration and reflection? All of these events are free and open to the public.

    • Black Ribbon Week - Why not show your support for universal human rights by wearing a black ribbon all week.
    • Sunday Jan. 20 - Peace, Justice and Democracy March and Rally 1-3 PM
      The March begins 1 PM at the Food Coop parking lot(Kearney), travels down Water Street, and concludes at the Pope Marine Park for a 2 PM Rally. We encourage you to bring your signs, banners, voices and drums and of course a friend or two. We will peacefully march with our feet, share thoughts with our voices and rally spirits with our songs!
    • Monday Jan. 21, 2002 - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Candle Light Vigil
      Haller's Fountain & Terrace Steps, Taylor & Washington Street beginning at Sundown 5:30-6:30 PM (Please note time change!). This is a time for remembrance & reflections. Read a favorite speech. Sing a freedom song. Share a poem or simply join in a silent solidarity. Co-Sponsored by the North Olympic Human Rights Network
    • Wednesday Jan. 23, 2002 - Potluck Dinner & Conversation
      RoseWind Community Center from 6 -9 PM. Keynote address on Independent Media & Freedom of the Press presented by Seattle IndyMedia. Please RSVP to JCGP as space may be limited.
    • Saturday Jan. 26, 2002 - Uncensored - The Free *Your Mind* Party
      Oracle Arts Center - Amazing documentary film, Manufacturing Consent, starts at 7 PM, poetic, musical & oratorical performances follow. Come express yourself, your thoughts & opinions. Feel free to speak your mind!

    • March 22 - 7:00 PM Special Meeting - PT Community Center Card Room - Guest Speaker Ms. Sheri Herndon, Cofounder of Seattle IndyMedia, speaking on, "World Social Forum 2002 Perspectives." Ms. Herndon attended the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil and will talk about: the World Social Forum, Argentina, shifts in the globalization movement, and much more. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.
    • March 27 - 7:00 PM General Meeting - PT Community Center - Guest Speaker Prof. Don Hopps from the Institute for Washington's Future presents: Reforming Washington State's Economic Future. The Institute is an education center dedicated to the renewal of progressive values. Mr. Hopps will speak on Washington State's governmental finance system; specifically, demands, revenues, and the need for comprehensive reform. The talk will evaluate the present system on the basis of equity, adequacy, and accountability. From there, he will proceed to an analysis of the problems and propose a complete overhauling the present system in order to build one which fully empowers people to act effectively through their government to achieve the common good. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.

    April 2002

    • April 10 - 7 PM Community Center - Guest Speaker Toni Usibelli. Mr. Usibelli is Tony Usibelli the Assistant Director for Energy Policy at the Washington State Office of Trade and Economic Development (OTED). "The energy policy office is responsible for state energy policy analysis and implementation focusing on energy and greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation, renewable energy, national electricity policy, and international markets for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources." Mr. Usibelli has published widely on energy and environmental issues. He also teaches courses on natural resources, energy and the environment at The Evergreen State College.
    • April 24 - 7 PM Port Townsend Town Meeting 2002 Blue Heron Middle School
    • April 27 - 8 PM 3131 Haines Street Full Moon Party! Celebrate the Full Moon with the Jefferson County Green Party! Outside there will be a fire for gathering 'round, sipping hot chocolate and making smores. There will also be on hand a telescope for stargazing and the game of horseshoes. Inside there will be music and dancing, games, a raffle, plus the all-important 'snacks and sweets' potluck potpourri.
