The Guinea current is sandwiched by two sub-tropical current systems, the cold Canaries and the Benguela currents in the northern and the southern hemispheres respectively. It is primarily a highly vulnerable tropical ecosystem, poorly studied, least protected and highly exploited for its living resources, rendering it one of the most threatened ecosystems globally. Initiatives have begun in recent times to raise awareness, document and protect the threatened biodiversity of this unique area. This paper looks at these initiatives and the way forward for sustained and effective biodiversity conservation strategies for the Guinea current large marine ecosystem.
