Ocean tide model errors will not cancel in the GRACE monthly averaged temporal gravity fields. The S2 (and also K2) terms have alias frequencies much longer than 30 days, so they remain almost unreduced in the monthly averages. Using the first 18 monthly gravity fields from GRACE spatially consistent residual S2 ocean tide signal can be seen in GRACE to spherical harmonic degree and order 10, relative to the applied CSR4.0 tide model. Initial comparisons with pelagic tide gauge observations to the west of Britain where significant residual S2 ocean tide signal is found from GRACE confirms the findings.
