Unlike the previous versions of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), the ITRF2004 combines times series of station positions and Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP). This paper focuses on the status of the ITRF2004 and discusses the main characteristics of its definition: origin, scale, orientation and its time evolution. Particular emphasis will be given to the current assessment of geocenter motion, scale variation and its coupling with station vertical motions and the accuracy of the No-Net-Rotation implementation. Evaluation and quality assessment of the ITRF2004 will be addressed and in particular the consistency between the frame and EOPs, being included for the first time in the combination the ITRF combination.
